Hesed Caring Connection

Do you need help? Would you like to help?

Bikur Cholim (Visiting the Sick): This service will be provided by our synagogue by performing the mitzvah of visiting the sick. Often when a volunteer calls to arrange a visit, sometimes that phone call visit is all that person needed or wanted. Volunteers will receive a class on Bikur Cholim. Before they embark on this endeavor. Volunteers feels as though they have made a difference in someone's life. Most visits should be only minutes in length of time...Just being remembered and thought of goes a long way in making someone feel better.

Yad B'Yad (Hand in Hand): This Hesed service assists members in times of illness, emergency, and other extraordinary circumstances. Volunteers can bring food, provide transportation and other support services when daily life is interrupted by unforseen events. This type of loving-kindness is appreciated in ways which are priceless.

Se'udah Havara'ah (Meal of Condolence): The first full meal that mourners eat upon returning from interment is traditionally provided by the neighbors of the bereaved. This basic courtesy is so important that some religious thinkers believe it was biblically ordained. The idea of bringing the mourner the sustenance of life following the reality of death from the funeral, offers consideration, care, comfort and encouragement for the bereaved. Most times this mitzvah is taken care by friends and neighbors and all that is needed is a phone call to confirm that this mitzvah has been addressed. People who know of this commandment understand the profound meaning, purpose and dignity associated with this first meal offering. The Jewish Way In Death & Mourning

Dor L'Dor (Generation to Generation): This group of volunteers would have the honor and privilege of helping young families deal with the birth of a child. Providing calm, emotional support during these exciting, awesome and sometimes frightening times. They may need a birthing doula, babysitting,or car-pooling for older sibblings, a meal, a phone call. New mothers and fathers also need care.
